Deutschland Konzerten

Last Updated: January 03, 2007

Some of the best concert experiences I've had in my life were during my time in Germany (1988-94).  Unbelievable & unforgettable to say the least!  Below are many of the ticket stubs from the numerous shows I saw.  I really love how the tickets in Germany are so much more colorful and memorable than in America where the uber-corporate, monopolistic and greedy Ticketmaster horde all their money and profits, printing out dull looking tickets on lame machines.  See ticket below for an example:

Typical example of Ticketmaster's horrible product in America.

AZTEC CAMERA - Wednesday, October 10th 1990

This show by Roddy and the boyz was the best!  The opening band, "Horse" was cool!   Earlier, Alex (girlfriend at the time) tried to get me to stay home with her.   I tried to get her to come to the show.  We both lost out.  I went to Munich's TheaterFabrik, walked up, bought my ticket and went in.

It was a great show!  I was 8 feet from Roddy.  He went through all the tunes and came back for two encores.  The last tune was "How It Is" and he went into "Holidays in the Sun" by the Sex Pistols.  Near the end of the song, he threw his guitar over an amp to the back of the stage and onto the floor.  He walked off, holding up his hand in the form of a peace sign.  The band left and all that was left was the sound of feedback for a minute.  Then, a roadie came, shut off the amp and that was it.

Me and friends on train to Munich & Peter Murphy show.  From left to right: Pat, Shawn, me, Brian, Danno and Chuck.

PETER MURPHY - Wednesday, October 3rd 1990

Best concert of my life!  Me, Pat, Danno, Shawn, Chuck and Brian went to Peter Murphy in Munich's TheaterFabrik.  It was beautiful!  The club was small and personal.  The opening band was from Munich and was good but the singer was drunk or stoned.

Peter came out in black and took complete control.  He mesmerized me with his way of gazing into the lights and doing various gestures.  It was incredibly emotional!  I cried when he played "Marlene Dietrich's Favorite Poem" and right after "Dragnet's Drag".  But, there were problems.

First, he only played one hour and left without saying anything.  No encore.  The reason was because he got angry at the audience.  The Germans didn't 100% get into the show.  Plus, the biggest problem was Shawn.  See, Brian brought a camera.  But, before that...

See, when Peter Murphy first came out, Shawn kept asking, "That you Peter?"  Well, Peter answered with, "And, who are you young man?"  Then, later, a girl who we met with other girls got on Shawn's back and took picture after picture...WITH flash.  What was even worse was when Brian and then Shawn got on Danno's shoulders to take even more pictures.

Evidently Peter didn't like the intrusion in such a small space so, he got even.  While he was in mid-song, he picked up a glass of water that was on stage and doused Shawn with it.  The water covered Shawn and his camera as he flashed away.  Shawn lowered the camera, hunched his shoulders and smiled at Peter.  Murphy then did one better.  He started twirling his microphone by the cord in a circle, trying to hit Shawn.

Swish...swish...swish was the sound as the mic got closer to Shawn, who was still on Danno's shoulders.   Shawn got down at the last minute, avoiding getting hit.  Peter was gone less than 30 minutes later.  Not cool!

What was cool was Lisa (top left picture above in collage).  We met her going to the show right after sitting down together on the U-Bahn.  She was staring at us from across the train, her head in hands.  We all started talking and she turned out to be quite nice.   Beautiful too!  But, all the guys were fawning over her.  She loved the attention and it turned out her father's an officer in the Army Reserve.  She goes to the University of Maryland on McGraw in Munich.  She had seen Peter Murphy before and said he played Prince's song "Purple Rain".  Cool!  While talking, I got her address.

Pat paid for my train, concert, food, etc,.  Cool!  Great friend!  He's a true friend.  Chuck bought me my T-shirt.  See, I haven't been paid for 3 months.  That's the drawback to the Photo Lab Manager job at Reese Kaserne.  Being a contracted employee means I don't get my paycheck when I'm supposed to.  Don't ask me why.  Budget problems maybe.

About my check...I've talked with the Augsburg IG, my bosses, Stuttgart Finance (they write the checks) and even wrote a letter to Stars & Stripes newspaper.  It seems Augsburg Finance keeps losing the vouchers.  It's a sad affair all the way around.  So, in my time of financial hardship, it was really cool that my friends stood by me and helped out for the Peter Murphy concert.

But, back to Shawn's picture taking fiasco...God!  I was so angry when the concert ended so quickly.   I knew it was Shawn's fault.  So ticked was I that I didn't even talk to anyone much.  I sort of yelled at Shawn afterwards while waiting for the train back to Augsburg.  That it wasn't cool that a camera was brought and that if he wanted a picture, he should have bought a poster or T-shirt.  I was angry!

I remember seeing Lisa a bit later walk off to be alone.  I wanted to follow but I was so F'ing angry!   There went a perfect opportunity but I just wasn't in the mood.

While on the U-Bahn, I got angry again talking about it to Pat.  Lisa came to Pat (she had been with Pat during the show).  They sat and talked.  I closed my eyes.  They were talking about something and cuddled.  I looked and she was looking at me through her hair while in Pat's arms.  I just closed my eyes and smiled.

I opened my eyes and she was smiling.  I smiled more.  Pat smiled.  We all smiled.  Hell, it was a  smile-fest.  But, what was cool was the way she looked at me with half closed eyes.  She knew what she was doing.  But hey, so did I.  What a beauty!!  Gorgeous!

Lisa (above) was at the Jane's Addiction concert, making for a cool time!  Talk about a flirt!  As it turned out though and being that I was still in a romance with girlfriend Alex, nothing happened but a bit of teasing and flirtatious shenanigans.

There were other concerts I went to while in Germany.  One of the most bizarre experiences was going to see "Shock Therapy" with my good friend Bryan and others.  After the show, I met "Itchy", the singer and he was in such a wild mood that he tried out a martial arts/defense move on me and before I knew it, he had me on the ground.  It was a night to remember to say the least.   Bryan loved the fact that "Itchy", one of his favorites, had his way with me.

"Itchy" is a strangely gifted artist, singer and songwriter.  His artwork can be checked out at www.shocktherapyweb.de among others.  Don't worry if you don't understand German.  His art/pictures say a thousand words that anyone can understand!  And, as of this writing, "Itchy" is in jail.   What a wonderful friend Bryan is for introducing me to such an illustrious and wonderful role model.  Hey, it was all in fun and who knew the guy was so eccentric and unstable?  "Good Times!"
