Music & Video Disc Jockey Events, History, Inspirations & Resume

Last Updated: June 29, 2008

An international DJ, Myles has been mixing both music and visuals since his beginnings in Augsburg Germany, circa 1988.  As DJ Matisse, he's always brought the multi-media experience into his work.  Past gigs include ones in Germany, Texas, Illinois and throughout Los Angeles.  His most memorable credits include being the pre-show DJ for Erasure at the American Legion Hall, the on set cast party DJ for the now defunct TV show 'Chicago Hope' and the resident Deejay for the short lived weekly 'Boudoir Du BurLez'.  Making musical/visual magic is what makes DJ Matisse stand out as each set is a fresh work of art for the senses.  And, now ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the new DJ Matisse residencies...

Why "Matisse"?  With each DJ session, he starts things off like an open and clean canvas, not knowing where his musical journey will lead and take him.  Letting the music, imagery and flow guide, a musical work of "art" is created in the process.

More than just a MUSIC Disc Jockey, he often combines music & remixes with the best in music video and in past instances, comedy clips.  It all works together to create a most unforgettable experience.

Various "Pleasuredome" flyers

'Pleasuredome' was a short lived club @ The Palms where I played the best in new wave and alternative music and videos.

This is a self portrait that was used in advertising my DJ/VJ residency at the Bayerischen Lowen (bar & restaurant) in Augsburg Germany as well as mixed CDs that were sold at the bar circa 1994 & 1998.  Many women (and men) thought I would either be DJing without my shirt on or giving a strip show.  Neither one happened.  Just a bit of teasing in advertising, that's all.

A flyer for the 1997 opening of "Blue Mondays" at the since closed Firehouse in Hollywood.  The music was a mix of circuit, retro and alternative dance.  There were three rotating DJ's on the residency roster but I ended up doing the lion's share of work due to the other DJ's having other commitments and not believing in the effort as much.  It was a cool time.  Unfortunately, the crowds didn't support the night as hoped.  Too many clubs to choose from resulted in the eventual demise of not only "Blue Mondays", but the club 'Firehouse' as well.

Flyer for Labor Day weekend 2000 festivities.  My DJ gig was at a 'straight' club called Liquid on Lower Greenville Avenue in Dallas.  It was a huge theater renovated into a gorgeous club venue.  The turnout the night I worked was quite good.  I played all dance and circuit, mainly from Billboard's dance charts.  The music was all from my own private collection.  The most vivid memory of that night was when a woman came up to request some songs and dissed me by saying my music sounded too much like Star, the local commercial station.  You know what, I take that as a compliment because the "Star" type music is all they play in Dallas, so she was just looking to push buttons and be different.  Fact is, since I was getting paid hundreds of dollars to bring in and keep the people, the LAST thing I needed to do was play songs that would drive the masses away.  Trust me, I'm good at playing unique while at the same time entertaining the masses.  It's called experience and talent and loving all types of music.  It's not about insecurity.  That's MTV's job.

Tongue in cheek flyers for a night at the renowned Viper Room on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles in 2001.  I was brought on board by drag personality Candy Ass and actor Alexis Arquette to run lights and video imagery.  I found and compiled all kinds of retro clips from cheesy films and TV shows from the 70's & 80's for the visuals.  It was a really cool gig.  Full of energy and fun and even a few celebs.  The music was all campy retro from the disco & new wave era.  The monthly event didn't last more than a few months due to less than stellar  turnout (probably due to the name created by the promoters NOT Viper Room) and due to the fact that the night was a bit too risqué, even for the Viper Room.

  wpeCF.jpg (39306 bytes)

The above are flyers for my DJ/VJ residency at Club Traz, a bar/dance club in the college (SIUC) town of Carbondale, Illinois.  The music was all about circuit, dance and retro with a nice mix of students.  What attracted me most to this place was not only the layout, which was grand, but the style of music they allowed me to play.  They gave me basically 100% control over what I played which was way cool.  I completely respected the fact that they thought highly enough of me to let me have free reign.  But, then again, I had opened as a DJ for Erasure and had done "Chicago Hope's" X-mas party.   What more can you ask for?  I knew I had "paid my dues" and could make ANYBODY'S night UNFORGETTABLE whether they be a Bauhaus, Guns N' Roses, J'LO or Crystal Method fan!!!  I played everything from Whitney and Cher to Madonna, Beastie Boys and Jane's Addiction.  Even with all the great music, the place had trouble filling up.  WHY?  Because on the predominately conservative campus, "Club Traz" was known as a "GAY" club which meant most "straight" folks (especially men) were afraid of even stepping foot in the place.

I can't emphasis how sorry I think that kind of "fearful" mentality is.  It's not about religious beliefs or being conservative, it's about looking at people as PEOPLE and not being judgmental of their sexuality.  Trust me, I've known every type of human being you can think of...Whether they be  celebrity, sports figure, drag queen, actor, producer, screenwriter, computer wiz, soldier, director, musician, grocery clerk, or wannabe, it's NOT about condemning or praising them for their pluses or minuses but being tolerant and understanding that everybody isn't going to think EXACTLY like you do.   It ain't about that.  It's about embracing the individual characteristics that everyone possesses, NOT judging them by what YOU think is right or wrong.  That's GOD's job!!!!!

This is an certificate/award I won at the annual radio/TV dinner held by WIDB radio and SPC-TV at SIUC.  Both are student run stations where I got a great deal of experience, all on a volunteer basis.  I had a weekly radio show on WIDB called 'The Mack Daddy Myles Hour' where I played a tongue in cheek character.  I spun mostly soul, R&B and dance music.  As you can see from the above certificate, my character was known as a messabout full of unquenchable and egotisical sexual desire.  Good times!

wpeD1.jpg (48837 bytes)

Self-made ad for my weekly show on WIDB Radio, the student run station at SIUC.  There was no budget for advertising within the station, so the above was my own way of getting the word out.

wpeD4.jpg (29775 bytes)

Another self-made ad to promote my weekly TV show on the student run station SPC-TV at SIUC.  It turned out to be a 10 one hour episode run full of fun and success.

Flyer for a T-Dance that I did during the July 4th weekend 2000.  Lots of high energy dance and circuit music was played.

A flyer for THE monthly club/concert event in Los Angeles that I was the official videographer for.  It was a blast videoing the event which included an hour long set of glam and rock at midnight by a very tight band.  Special guests included Ann Magnuson, Leif Garrett, and many others.  You may still be able to check out footage of mine at www.makeup.net on the "parties" page.  Just check out the months in 2000/01.  I got the gig by seeing the band at another club, liking what I saw, and asking the band leader Xander if he was interested in having his gigs videoed.  I offered my services for free (which I wouldn't recommend due to the fact that most people wouldn't even THINK of offering anything for "free", especially in Hollywood...and if you do, trust me, you will be looked at with a skeptical eye which to me is a testament to the times we live in) which he (and the promoters of Makeup) gladly took me up on and the rest is history.  Speaking of which, the club is now "history" as it shut its doors after a handful of years.  They come back for special events/holidays which includes a special 2003 Halloween Makeup Extravaganza at the 'Hollywood Athletic Club'!  The date: Saturday, October 25th as well as others in the future.

This event is special for two reasons.  For one, it was the one and only time (so far) that I've DJ'ed at 'Club Seven', one of the most popular clubs in Dallas.  I got the gig through word of mouth.  Ron Foshee and his significant other were looking for a DJ and yours truly was recommended.  The set itself and party was alot of fun.  I liked the challenge of going into a club cold and being able to acclimate myself to the equipment quickly and perfectly.  It was "mix heaven" as I spun nothing but dance, both modern and classic.  The other reason this event is special is that, on a sadder note, Ron passed away less than a week later, evidently from a suicide.

Looking back, I wonder if there was anything I could have done to help him through his evident crisis, but there were really no signals that I saw.  He seemed quite happy and content at the party.  I do remember at the end of my gig though when Ron asked as I was leaving if I would be back.  I answered that I would be back in a bit.   It may sound stupid but I could sense a needy quality in Ron's voice.  I really wanted to come back but ended up NOT.  It was a decision I would regret.   It's all kind of surreal.  One week someone is with us, the next minute they're gone.  It makes you really respect the precious MOMENTS called life and when it comes down to it, we shouldn't worry too much about a tomorrow that may never come.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have come back that night...Maybe I could have influenced him (in a subtle way) to give life a chance.  But, how was I to know these were his LAST days?  Should I have taken more notice of his "needy" qualities???  In some ways, I think so.  Most times, I really think people don't S-P-E-L-L it out for us, but if we pay attention, we can really tell when someone is suffering.  To me, it doesn't necessarily take God or religion or an awareness of Psychology but just an "awareness" in general.

As I get older, I am beginning to realize more and more when someone is having problems in life and when they're not.  It's about taking a stand and helping those in need.  In my opinion, it doesn't have to be in "church" per se, because there are many people who are neck deep in problems who have NEVER stepped foot in a church.  However naive it may sound, like the Depeche Mode song, "People are People so why should it be, that you and I should get along so awfully?"  We are all on the same planet.   We are all from the same God.  Isn't it about time we "get along"??   To me, that would be the best way to show the ultimate respect to whichever "God" we believe in.

A gig I DJ'ed (Karaoke'd) at from August 2002.  It was loads of fun with people dressing up in 80's styles and singing retro favorites.  It turned out to be a great night.  The hosts were Miriam and Jason.  My job was to cue up the songs for each and every singer.

This is one of the newest nights at Moby Dick.  It was created with 'Charity Case', me and retro music/comedy/variety in mind.  The nature of the night: 60's, 70s & 80's music mixed with a variety of vintage and present day comedy clips and a variety of visuals & music.

"Moby Request Live" is a request night where the customers request the videos they want to see from an extensive book of music videos.  Alot of fun and high energy where you never know what's going to get requested.  I used to alternate Saturday nights with DJ Ric Herrington.  Now that I'm out of the mix, I think it's all about DJ Adam Metts and DJ Ric Herrington.

Below are some old school flyers from my humble beginnings as a DJ in Augsburg Germany.  In those days, I designed, distributed, & promoted my own flyers as well as brought in my own music and video equipment.  From the beginning, I've often tried to integrate music videos and ambient imagery into my DJ sets.  To me, it was all about a complete audio/visual journey/experience.  It all worked!  The combination of lip sync contests, giveaways & wide screen video screens brought the people (military & civilian) out to the club.
