Bill Hempel
A true friend and fellow Army photographer. I met him in 1988 while stationed in Augsburg Germany. He lived in my barracks and worked with me at Gablingen in the TASC Department. We were not only colleagues but friends as well. Bill had a witty and sharp sense of humor and was one of the most honest, down to earth, friendly guys I had ever met in the Army. We liked a lot of the same things from Pink Floyd to films and had a great deal of respect for one another. Before getting out of the military, he had a bout with skin cancer from being in the sun too long. It left a large dark spot on his lower leg but seemed to be taken care of. After he finished with the Army, he returned home to a northern state in the US and began his life as a civilian. Before he died, he mailed me a birthday gift, Prince's CD '1999'. I've still got it over 10 years later. I had planned to go visit him, not knowing how serious his illness had become. We talked by phone and kept in touch by letter. One day, when I called to talk to him, I was informed that he had passed away. It was one of the most unexpected pieces of news I had ever received and it jarred me to my soul. One of the good and nice guys was gone. A true friend and one that will be missed.
